We checked 6 ice rinks in and near Shropshire, from Telford and Alderford Lake to Birmingham, for dates, prices and age rules. Updated November 2026.
Six ice rinks are within reach of Shropshire in 2026, and this guide puts them in one place with dates, prices and age rules. Most people land on Telford Ice Rink, open all year with Santa skates in December, or Alderford Lake near Whitchurch from 27 November. Four entries were checked against the rink’s own site on 5 November 2026; the other two say when they were last read.
Distances are approximate and in a straight line from Shrewsbury. Prices are per person unless we say otherwise and can change, so confirm them when you book.
Is there an ice rink in Shrewsbury this Christmas?
We found none announced. Neither Shrewsbury Town Council nor Shropshire Council had listed a 2026 rink when we checked on 20 October, our searches on 5 November found none, and the Christmas pages we track for the town (our Christmas lights switch-on page and Christmas markets page) mention none. If a pop-up rink is announced, it will go on this page.
Two past rinks near the town are worth checking before you assume they are back. Attingham Park ran a synthetic “eco” rink in 2023, and Salop Leisure has run an outdoor synthetic rink in past Christmases. We found no 2026 listing for either, but the National Trust’s and Salop Leisure’s Christmas pages would not load for us on 5 November, so we cannot rule them out.

The two rinks in Shropshire
1. Telford Ice Rink
About 13 miles from Shrewsbury. This is the county’s year-round rink, run by Telford & Wrekin Council at International Way, with public skating every day of the week and free skate hire.
Telford Tigers ice hockey games take up weekend evenings. Most Shropshire Council residents pay the non-card prices below, because the TLC card is Telford & Wrekin’s leisure card.
The Friday 5pm session is for SEND skaters and their families. The rink says all public sessions are wheelchair friendly, with a ramp on and off the ice.
One carer per booking goes free with a carer ID. There are no disabled bays in the car park, which The International Centre operates; Blue Badge holders pay and display but get double time. Telford Central station, which has trains from Shrewsbury, is about 20 minutes’ walk, and the bus station about ten.
Christmas sessions
Tickets for the festive programme are on sale now, and the rink warns these sessions are in high demand.

Its timetable page gave no times for Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year when we read it on 5 November. We will add them when they appear.

2. Alderford Lake, Whitchurch
About 16 miles from Shrewsbury and a mile from Whitchurch. Alderford’s skating page describes real ice under a covered rink, leading out on to an open-air skating track, with sessions of about 50 minutes.
Its boots run from size 6 to size 16, and that smallest boot sets the minimum age. Under-13s need an adult on the ice with them, and under-18s need an adult on site.
Carers get free tickets, and polar bear skating aids are available to hire.
Alderford’s pages disagree on the closing date. The skating page says 27 November to 3 January, and a ticket listing says the same, while the Christmas page gives 27 November to 23 December.
Check your date when you book, especially after Christmas.
Themed sessions include K-Pop Ice Party on Saturday 5 and 19 December at 10.30am, Nashville on Ice on Friday 11 December at 8.30pm, and an adults-only Rave Skate on Friday 18 December at 8.30pm. The Relaxed SEN sessions are listed for “Saturday 29th November” and Saturday 12 December at 10.30am.
The 29th is a Sunday in 2026, so confirm that one. Our Alderford Lake Christmas page has the rest of the programme.
Open 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 on the skating page; 50-minute sessions; session times on the booking platform

Skate hire is included in both Christmas tickets but costs £3 extra for an ordinary public skate. Arrive about 30 minutes early to collect skates.
Gwella’s site gave us an empty reply on 5 November, so these details are from Chester Online’s read on 3 November, including its Christmas skating page and April 2026 price list.

Also within reach
Winter Wonderland Stoke: about 31 miles from Shrewsbury and 15 from Market Drayton, on Lichfield Street in Hanley, ST1 3JN. The organiser’s home page describes a real-ice rink and says “Returning 26 November 2026 to January 2027”, though another block on the same page says 27 November. Session times and prices are not published yet, so we have left it out of our count of six. The Stafford Times read its age rules on 4 November: skating is for age 4 and over, and children aged 7 and under must be with someone aged 16 or over.

How we chose
This page lists the ice rinks we could find within about 39 miles of Shrewsbury with 2026 dates or prices on the operator’s own site. We did not choose by taste. Dates, prices and rules come from each operator’s published pages, and where a detail comes from a sister title’s earlier read, the entry says so. Run a place that should be here, or spot something that has changed? Email newsdesk@shropshiretoday.co.uk. Taken a good photograph of any of these places? Email it to newsdesk@shropshiretoday.co.uk and we will add it with your name as the credit.
