The fastest Shrewsbury to London train takes 2h 34m and every single one needs a change. Journey times, fares and season tickets from each Shropshire station.
There is no direct train from Shropshire to London. Not from Shrewsbury, not from anywhere else in the county. Avanti West Coast withdrew the daily Shrewsbury to London Euston service in June 2024, citing very low passenger numbers, and checking the timetable for three separate weekdays this autumn returns the same answer every time: every London journey from Shropshire requires at least one change.
The good news is that the change is quick and the fastest times are competitive. The best Shrewsbury to Euston journey found for a normal weekday is 2 hours 34 minutes, changing at Birmingham New Street. The bad news is what the fast version costs, and it is not a small difference: an annual season on the fast route is £16,396, against £7,600 on the slow one.
Fastest journey time from each Shropshire station
Shrewsbury is the county town and the county’s biggest station, and it is third on that list. The reason is geography rather than neglect. Whitchurch is twenty minutes from Crewe on the West Coast Main Line, and Shifnal is twenty minutes from Wolverhampton. Shrewsbury sits on neither fast line: everything from there has to run east to Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Stafford or Crewe first.
Shrewsbury to London, in practice
There are roughly five options an hour’s worth of journeys through the morning, and they split into two very different products.

The 2h 34m to 2h 45m journeys use an Avanti West Coast train for the London leg. The 3h 45m to 3h 51m journeys use London Northwestern Railway instead, and they exist for one reason: they are the ones the cheap ticket is valid on. Same departure from Shrewsbury, same platform at Birmingham, an hour and eleven minutes’ difference on arrival.
Journeys back run through the day on the same pattern, with the last useful departures from Euston in the early evening. Check before you travel: Avanti temporarily removed 38 daily weekday services from its busiest routes for a six-week period from 20 July to 28 August 2026, so August timetables are thinner than the autumn ones charted above.

That first row is the one to understand before you commit to a Shropshire commute. £7,600 a year buys you the 3h 45m journey and nothing faster. £16,396 a year, more than twice as much, buys you the 2h 34m one. There is no middle option on the West Coast route: you either hold a ticket Avanti accepts or you do not.
For occasional travel the same split applies. On a normal weekday the walk-up fares from Shrewsbury are:

The towns with no station
Three of Shropshire’s larger towns have no railway station at all, and this catches people out when they move.
- Oswestry (population around 17,000) lost its passenger service in 1966. The nearest station is Gobowen, about three miles north, from which the fastest London journey is 2h 50m changing at Chester.
- Bridgnorth has a station, but it is the terminus of the Severn Valley Railway, a heritage line to Kidderminster. It is not on the national network and you cannot buy a through ticket to London on it. The nearest national rail options are Telford or Wolverhampton.
- Market Drayton lost its line in 1963. The nearest usable stations are Wem, Whitchurch or Stafford.
The county’s remaining stations are Shrewsbury, Whitchurch, Wem, Yorton, Prees, Gobowen, Church Stretton, Craven Arms, Broome, Hopton Heath, Bucknell, Ludlow and Shifnal, plus the Cambrian line stops west towards Wales.
Ludlow and the south: a different London
South Shropshire is on the Marches line, and its quickest London journey does not go east at all. From Ludlow, the fastest option runs south to Newport in south Wales and then east on Great Western to London Paddington: 3h 8m, leaving Ludlow at 07:06 and arriving at 10:14. Going the other way, via Crewe to Euston, takes 3h 19m.
That matters for tickets as well as time. Ludlow season tickets are priced to London Terminals, at £15,028 a year for any permitted route or £14,652 a year for a Travelcard restricted to travel via Hereford. Craven Arms works the same way, at 3h 16m to Paddington or 3h 5m to Euston.
If you are choosing between north and south Shropshire on commuting grounds, the honest summary is that the north gives you a faster journey to Euston and the south gives you a slower one to a different station, at a similar price.
