We checked 17 Shropshire shops, from Tanners Wines in Shrewsbury to Castle Bookshop in Ludlow, for opening hours and what they sell. Updated November 2026.

Shropshire has 17 independent shops worth a Christmas shopping trip in 2026, and this guide puts them in one place with opening hours, addresses and what each one sells. Twelve are in Shrewsbury, most on Wyle Cop and the High Street, and the rest are in Ludlow, Oswestry, Bridgnorth and Bishop’s Castle. Tanners Wines, Appleyards, Snoop and Castle Bookshop are the names most people land on.

The hours below are regular hours, not Christmas ones: none of these shops had published festive hours when we checked, and they often change close to Christmas, so check before a special trip.

Dates for the Christmas shopping diary

Christmas lights. Oswestry switches on first, on 19 November, and Bridgnorth and Ludlow follow on 27 November. Shrewsbury had not named its night when we last checked. Our Shropshire Christmas lights guide has every town’s date and times.

Christmas markets. Shrewsbury Square has artisan and farmers’ market fairs from 14 November, Ludlow has four Christmas market days and Tinsel Tuesdays, and Much Wenlock’s fayre is on Saturday 5 December. All of them are in our Shropshire Christmas markets guide.

Late night shopping. No 2026 late night date had been published by Shrewsbury BID, the Darwin Shopping Centre or Shrewsbury Market Hall on 5 November. The Market Hall’s page for its last late night is for Saturday 6 December 2025, from 5pm to 10pm, with mulled wine, cocktails and Christmas shopping. We will add 2026 dates when they appear.

Getting there. Our Shropshire Christmas travel guide has the rail and bus changes over the holiday.

Shops we could not confirm

We left these out because we could not read them on 5 November. That does not mean either has closed, and we would welcome a line from each.

  • The Toybox on Shrewsbury High Street, listed by Original Shrewsbury. Its website showed only a password page.
  • Illuminate Book Shop on Wyle Cop, which Original Shrewsbury calls Shropshire’s largest Christian bookshop. We did not reach its own site to confirm its hours.

How we chose

We started from Shrewsbury BID’s Original Shrewsbury directory, its gift, book, jewellery, home and food categories, then added long-standing shops in Ludlow, Oswestry, Bridgnorth and Bishop’s Castle whose own websites we could read. We kept independents that sell things people give as presents and whose own site or directory listing we could read on 5 November 2026, and looked for closure notices. Tanners, Booka and Mousetrap have more than one branch, and we say so in their entries. Where a shop’s own hours differ from its directory listing, we use the shop’s.
