Two Multihog crews fix potholes on nine Shropshire roads in October, from Pulverbatch and Alveley on the 5th to Bridgnorth on the 27th. Every road and date.

Shropshire Council’s pothole machines start their October round on Monday 5 October, at Pulverbatch near Shrewsbury and at Cooks Cross in Alveley. Nine roads are on the list, and the last is Sydney Cottage Drive in Bridgnorth on Tuesday 27 October.

The council published the October programme on 28 September. It runs two Multihog crews this month. In September there were three, after the council added a third machine for that month’s list. The number of locations is the same: nine in each month.

Work is on weekdays only, between 9.30am and 4pm, except where a shorter window is given below.

Multihog 2 does most of the work this month, with six of the nine days. Its round runs from Alveley in the south east of the county to Hopton Castle in the south west. Multihog 1 has three days, two of them around Shrewsbury.

By place, the list breaks down like this:

  • Shrewsbury area: Pulverbatch on 5 October and Washford Road on 19 October
  • Bridgnorth: Rosehill Drive on 20 October and Sydney Cottage Drive on 27 October
  • Alveley: Cooks Cross on 5 October and Birch Grove on 9 October
  • South Shropshire: Cardington on 12 October, Hopton Castle on 13 October and Craven Arms on 22 October

There is nothing in the north of the county this month. Oswestry, Whitchurch, Market Drayton and Ellesmere have no Multihog days in October.

What a Multihog does

The Multevo Multihog planes off the road surface and leaves a squared-off hole for a following gang to fill. The council says it is quicker than saw-cutting and breaking out a defect by hand. It also says the machines reduce the chance of potholes forming in the short to medium term and cut down on road closures. Each one can treat 9,000 square metres of road a month.

Our September pothole story has the bigger picture: the condition of the county’s 5,166 km of road, and the council’s own figures on how many potholes it fills each year.

A bigger job near Shifnal

Pothole days are short. Resurfacing is not. The council has also announced that the A4169 from Shifnal to The Hem, including the Bridgnorth Road roundabout and its approaches, will be resurfaced from Monday 19 to Wednesday 28 October.

That is a full road closure from 9.30am to 4pm on weekdays, with a signed diversion. Access is kept for:

  • residents and businesses inside the closure, when it is safe
  • pedestrians, dismounted cyclists and riders
  • emergency vehicles on blue light calls

The work is by Kier Infrastructure for the council.

What it means for you

  • If your road is on the list, expect one working day of disruption in the hours shown. The council does not describe these as full closures, and says the machines cut down on the need for them.
  • Two of the days finish early, at 2.45pm: Cooks Cross on 5 October and Washford Road on 19 October.
  • Check the detail before you travel. The council points drivers to the interactive map on one.network for each scheme. Our Shropshire roadworks and travel page tracks the bigger closures, including two National Highways night closures round Shrewsbury on Monday 5 October.
  • If your road is not on the list, report the defect to the council. The October list covers nine locations in a county with more than 5,000 km of road.
