Two hours at Royal Shrewsbury or Princess Royal now costs £4.50 and a full day £10.45, from 2 November. The 10-visit pass goes from £8.50 to £15 on 1 December.

Parking at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford costs more from Monday 2 November. Two hours goes up from £4 to £4.50, and a full day from £9.50 to £10.45.

Updated 2 November: the trust’s car parking page now shows the new charges as in force from today. It says nothing yet about buying the 10-visit pass before 1 December.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust announced the new charges on 12 October. They also apply at William Farr House, the trust’s site on Mytton Oak Road in Shrewsbury, used for blood tests and therapies.

It is the second rise in 19 months. The last one came in April 2025, which the trust said at the time was the first increase since 2021.

The new charges

The first 20 minutes stay free. Every other band goes up by between 50p and 95p. The current rates are from the trust’s car parking charges page, checked on 15 October. The new ones are from the 12 October announcement.

The frequent visitor pass nearly doubles

The biggest change falls on people who come in again and again. The trust’s frequent visit concession gives 10 visits over three months. From 1 December it goes up from £8.50 to £15.00.

That is a rise of £6.50, or 76%. Each visit on the pass goes from 85p to £1.50. It is still far cheaper than paying on exit, but it is the part of the change that will be felt most by people visiting a relative on a ward for weeks.

Who still parks free

The trust says the free parking concessions are unchanged. They cover:

  • Blue Badge holders
  • patients receiving renal dialysis or cancer treatment
  • people visiting in connection with a bereavement
  • parents of children staying overnight in hospital

Blue Badge holders at Royal Shrewsbury still need to register their car with the parking team. Our guide to parking at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital explains how.

The £2 bus stays at £2

The patient and visitor park and ride to Royal Shrewsbury keeps its £2 return fare. It runs from the Oxon park and ride car park to the Treatment Centre entrance, on weekdays only. The trust says more than 2,000 patient and visitor journeys a week are now made on it.

For two hours or more at the hospital, the bus is now less than half the price of parking on site. Parking at Oxon itself is free.

For the Princess Royal, the trust points to the 4, 99A, 99B and 100 buses, which stop at or serve the hospital.

Why the trust says it is doing it

Matt Neal, the trust’s chief estates, facilities and capital officer, said:

“We are sorry that we have had to take the difficult decision to increase parking charges. We have aimed to keep increases as small as possible and protect the free parking concessions.”

The trust says all parking income pays for maintaining the car parks, off-site parking and the park and ride. It says any surplus goes back into easing parking and into frontline services.

It also lists what it is doing about space:

  • more staff parking at the Princess Royal, near the Ironbridge Suite
  • plans to reconfigure parking at the Telford site to use it better
  • plans at Royal Shrewsbury to demolish some old estate buildings and open more parking near the Copthorne building
  • space now used by the Hospitals Transformation Programme building work at Royal Shrewsbury coming back into use as construction finishes

The trust has not said how many spaces any of this adds, or when.

Parking in town is going up too

The hospital rise lands in the same month as Shropshire Council’s own parking review. On 14 October the council’s Cabinet sent out to consultation a plan for £4.80 an hour on Shrewsbury’s streets, with charges until 8pm. Our report on the council’s parking plan has the detail, car park by car park.

What it means for you

  • Before 2 November, nothing changes. Today’s rates apply until then.
  • If you visit often, the 10-visit pass is £8.50 until 1 December. Ask the parking team on 01743 261416, 9am to 4pm on weekdays, whether you can buy one before the price changes.
  • If you have an appointment of two hours or more at Royal Shrewsbury, the £2 park and ride from Oxon is now the cheaper option, on weekdays.
  • If you qualify for free parking, nothing changes, but make sure your car is registered.
  • Pay before midnight on the day if you use the JustPark app. The location code is 998842 at Royal Shrewsbury, 10036722 at the Princess Royal and 81000 at William Farr House.
  • Never pay through a QR code stuck on or near a pay machine. The trust warns that scammers put them there.

The trust says fuller details of charges, concessions and travel options will go on its website before the new prices start.
