Online tickets for the Mayor's Taste of Asia on 18 October close at noon on Thursday. Six cuisines at Shrewsbury Town FC, with profits to four local charities.

Shrewsbury’s first Mayor’s Taste of Asia takes place on Sunday 18 October, and online tickets close at noon on Thursday 15 October. The afternoon brings dishes from local Asian restaurants together at Smithy’s Bar, at Shrewsbury Town Football Club, from 12pm to 6pm.

All profits go to the four charities the Mayor, Councillor Bernie Bentick, has chosen for his year. Shrewsbury Town Council is organising it (Shrewsbury Town Council, 7 October).

What is on the menu

Dishes are served in sample-sized portions, so the idea is to try several. The council lists six cuisines:

  • Thai
  • Vietnamese
  • Nepalese
  • Indian
  • Sri Lankan
  • Turkish

Its examples include Thai spicy salads, Vietnamese fresh spring rolls and Nepalese curries. Drinks come from Rad Beer and Rowton Vineyard. More tokens can be bought on the day.

The event poster names the restaurants taking part. They include Chaiya for Thai food, Bà Ngoại for Vietnamese, Avatar Dining for Nepalese, The Shalimar for Indian, Mangal for Turkish and Sri Lanka House.

A note on dietary needs

The ticket page is upfront that this is authentic Asian cooking with limited vegetarian and specialist dietary options. Allergy and dietary information will be given for every dish, and the council asks buyers to bear that in mind before booking.

Its release says anyone with a specific requirement should mention it when booking, and alternatives will be offered where possible.

What it means for you

  • Book by noon on Thursday 15 October if you want to go. The council only mentions online sales.
  • Budget beyond the £20. The ticket covers £10 of tokens; anything more is bought at the event.
  • Check the dietary note first if you are vegetarian or have an allergy.

“Shrewsbury is a wonderfully diverse town, and this event is a great way to celebrate that diversity through food,” the Mayor said in the council’s release. He thanked the restaurants and businesses giving their time and food to the event.

The Taste of Asia is also on our What’s On in Shropshire list, with the rest of the county’s October events. Council car park charges across the town are on our parking in Shropshire page.
