Shrewsbury Half Marathon: Roads Shut 8am to Noon, 27 Sep

The Pareto FM Shrewsbury Half and Metric Half Marathon runs on Sunday 27 September 2026. The half starts at 8.30am, the metric half at 8.55am, and road closures across Shrewsbury town centre are in place from 8am until noon.

Both races start and finish at the West Mid Showground on Berwick Road, SY1 2PF. Entries have closed. What follows is what the organiser and the venue have actually published, and the two places where they contradict each other.

Road closures: 8am to 12pm

Shrewsbury Half Marathon Ltd’s residents’ guide is the only published list of affected roads, and it is specific (Residents’ guide, UKRunChat):

Roads closures are in place from 8am to 12pm. Marshals are placed throughout route to provide assistance and direction as required.

The route is circular. The roads affected are Gravel Hill Lane, Berwick Road, Coton Hill (lane nearest the river), Chester Street (lane nearest the river), Smithfield Road (lane nearest the river), Mardol Quay, Victoria Avenue, Victoria Quay, Welsh Bridge, Frankwell, Copthorne Road, New Street, Porthill Road, Roman Road (inside lane next to Shrewsbury School), Kennedy Road, Ashton Road, Butler Road, Kingsland Road, Longden Coleham, Coleham Head, English Bridge, Wyle Cop (left lane westbound), High Street, Mardol Head, Shoplatch, Bellstone, Barker Street, Bridge Street, Lower Claremont Bank, Claremont Bank, St Chads Terrace, Murivance, Town Walls, Beeches Lane, Williams Way, St Julians Crescent, St Julians Friars, and Victoria Avenue into The Quarry.

Two details matter more than the list itself:

• English Bridge is not fully shut. The two lanes closest to Coleham close, leaving an exit for traffic down Wyle Cop and over the bridge towards Abbey Foregate.
• Raven Meadows multi-storey car park stays open throughout, reached via Castle Foregate. That is the organiser’s stated answer for anyone who still needs to park in the town centre on the Sunday morning.

Several of the closures are single lanes rather than whole roads, which is why the guide names the lane in each case. The council’s live view of the closures is on one.network. The cut-off is a road reopening deadline

There is a strict cut-off of 2 hours 45 minutes for the half and 2 hours 20 minutes for the metric half. The organiser is unusually blunt about why:

This is due to needing to re-open the Town Centre Roads and is stipulated by Shropshire Council.

That is the same reason the closures end at noon. A 2:45 finish from an 8.30am start lands at 11.15am, leaving 45 minutes to clear the course.

Entries have closed

All four entry bands on the official entry page were closed or sold out when we checked on 6 September (Entryhub). The September band for the half was £40 and for the metric half £30, both listed as gone. Early bird prices earlier in the year were £33 affiliated and £35 unaffiliated for the half, £24 and £26 for the metric half.

Transfers to another runner close at 23:59 tonight, Sunday 6 September. There are no deferrals. Note that the foot of the organiser’s own race page still carries last year’s line, saying transfers close on “Sunday August 31st 2025”; the 2026 date given at the top of the same page, and on the entry page, is 6 September 2026.

Race morning practicalities

• Gates open from 7am. The organiser advises arriving then for an 8.30am start, because Berwick Road into the showground closes at 8am with the town centre roads.
• Parking at the showground costs £3, cash, exact change. It goes to the Shropshire County Showground charity.
• Baggage opens at 7am and closes at 8.20am. Once a bag is in it cannot be retrieved until after the race.
• There are 68 toilets on the 53-acre site, but the ones nearest the start get the queues. Jogging to a further block is the organiser’s own suggestion.
• Two water stations. Half marathon runners pass each twice, metric half runners once.
• Pacers on the half cover 1:30, 1:40, 1:50, 2:00, 2:10, 2:20, 2:30 and 2:45, the last of which is the tail runner. The metric half has 1:00, 1:10, 1:20 and 1:30.
• Minimum age is 17 on race day.

Walking in from Shrewsbury railway station takes about fifteen minutes, following signs for the Agricultural Showground.

Signage: yellow for the half, blue for the metric

The two routes split in two places and the organiser marks the difference by colour. Half marathon runners follow high-vis yellow signs with black arrows for the whole race. Metric half runners follow blue signs with white arrows at two points: just before three miles at the Welsh Bridge, where they carry straight on into Victoria Avenue while the half turns right over the bridge into Frankwell, and again in the final half mile inside the showground, where the finish differs.

Where the published times disagree

Four listings give three different windows for the same event, and only one of them is the organiser’s:

Go with the organiser. The 8.30am and 8.55am start times appear on the race page, on the entry page and in the residents’ guide, all three consistent.
